Premiered in Moscow in 1879, Eugène Onéguine is an opera in three acts based on the novel by Alexander Pushkin. It is considered by many as the epitome of Russian romanticism. Tchaikovsky avoids excessive theatrics in favour of a psychological analysis of the characters. The opera features three main romantic heroes: Tatyana who dreams of a better and more romantic life; Eugene, a vain, dandy man and Lensky, a young poet in love.
