About

Symphony No. 1 in G minor was the first notable piece written by Tchaikovsky. In four movements, the piece took a number of years to write. It was composed from 1866 and modified in 1874. Tchaikovsky had dedicated the piece to Nikolai Rubinstein, the brother of one of his former mentors - Anton Rubinstein. The Scherzo section was perfomed by Nikolai Rubinstein's orchestra in St. Petersburg in December of 1867. The premier of the full piece was again performed by Rubenstein's orchestra the following February. Despite a warm reception, it was not performed again for 15 years.
