Artistic and General Director — Valery Gergiev.

 

The history of this ensemble goes back more than two hundred years. The conductor’s podium has been occupied by Hector Berlioz, Richard Wagner, Pyotr Tchaikovsky, Sergei Rachmaninov, Gustav Mahler, Hans von Bülow, Arnold Schönberg, Otto Klemperer, and Arthur Nikisch among others.

In 1996 Valery Gergiev became head of the Mariinsky Theatre. Since his advent the orchestra’s repertoire has expanded many times, and the ensemble now maintains a full concert schedule and is listed among the world’s best orchestras by a whole range of authoritative foreign publications.
