Studied at the preparatory school of the Shanghai Conservatory. He continued his education in Canada and then at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston and the Colburn Conservatory of Music in Los Angeles (USA). Among his teachers are John Kadz, Laurence Lesser, Timothy Eddy and Ronald Leonard. He was a prize winner at the 2nd International Tchaikovsky Youth Competition in Sendai (Japan, 1995, third prize), the 18th Irving Klein International Youth Competition in San Francisco (USA, 2003, second prize), and the 23rd Young Musicians International Competition in Pasadena (USA, 2008, first prize). He has performed with many orchestras including the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, the Shanghai Philharmonic Orchestra and more. As a member of chamber ensembles he has collaborated with Itzhak Perlman, Ani Kavafian, Kim Kashkashian and other prominent musicians. He has been a member of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra and since 2012 has been a member of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra.

Bach and Mozart at the same time.
What is your favorite meal?
Any fish dish.
Do you have a favorite motto or proverb that you live your life by?
Working non stop.
Which person or people inspire you the most?
Yo-Yo Ma.
If you were 80 years old, what advice would you give to young people today?
Never learn the cello or any music instrument.
When you perform... who are you playing for?
People who love music, especially beautiful ladies!
What job would you least like to do?
A lawyer.
Is there a joke about musicians that you would like to share with us?
Not particularly, I guess all the viola jokes out there!
What's the "most played" non-classical track on your phone?
Smooth Criminal, Dave Brubeck-Take Five, Mile Davis-So What.
What is your favorite noise/sound? What is the most annoying noise for you?
Drums (most cool sound), Picolo (Most annoying sound).
If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be?
Germany, and Russia of course.
What is the first thing you think about when you hear the word Tchaikovsky?
Passion.
What is the first thing you think about when you hear the word competition?
Practice!
You are on a desert island and can bring only 3 items, what do you bring?
Cello, cello bow and a bible.
