Biography


 

Graduate of the Leningrad Conservatory studying viola and symphonic conducting. In 1972 he founded the Leningrad Philharmonic String Quartet. In 1984 he became Assistant Conductor and then Conductor of the Academic Symphony Orchestra. All of Bruckner’s symphonies, Handel’s oratorio “Saul”, Monteverdi’s opera “L’Orfeo”, Michael Tippett’s oratorio “A Child of Our Times” and Carl Orff’s musical drama “Bernauerin” were heard for the first time in Russia under his baton, and he also premiered compositions by Galina Ustvolskaya, Yuri Falik, Veniamin Basner, and Sergei Slonimsky.

 

He is a professor at the Saint Petersburg Conservatory and the Saint Petersburg University of Culture and Art.
